1. What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file stored on your device when you visit a website. Cookies allow the site to remember information about your visit, such as preferences or session state. Similar technologies include localStorage, sessionStorage and pixel tags.

2. Cookies used on reservoirs.earth

The cookies and similar technologies currently used on reservoirs.earth fall into these categories:

Strictly necessary

PurposeRequired for the site to function (e.g. remembering whether the cookie banner has been dismissed, if shown).

ConsentNot required (GDPR exemption).

DurationSession or up to 12 months.

Analytics (Google Analytics 4)

PurposeTraffic measurement via Google Analytics 4 with Consent Mode v2. In the EEA, UK and Switzerland analytics storage is denied by default and only enabled if you accept the cookie banner. This Google Analytics tag does not turn on advertising storage.

ConsentRequired in the EEA/UK/CH (via the cookie banner); granted by default elsewhere, with opt-out honored.

Duration_ga cookies: up to 24 months.

Reader features (Grow by Mediavine)

PurposeOptional reader tools (bookmarking, recommended content) provided by Grow, which stores identifiers in cookies/localStorage to remember your saved items.

ConsentSame gating as analytics: requires banner acceptance in the EEA/UK/CH; loaded by default elsewhere. Never loads if you decline.

DurationPer Mediavine's privacy policy.

Advertising (Mediavine)

PurposeThird-party ads managed by Mediavine. Mediavine and its partners may set first- and third-party cookies, tags and pixels to serve, measure and personalize ads. The data involved is listed in the Privacy Policy under “Mediavine Programmatic Advertising (Ver 1.1)”.

ConsentWhere consent is required (including the EEA, UK and Switzerland), non-essential advertising cookies are used only after you accept Mediavine’s consent tool. In US states with privacy laws, use the “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” link Mediavine shows on the site. Opting out still allows non-personalized ads.

Third-party embeds

PurposeMap tiles (OpenStreetMap / MapLibre) and weather data (Open-Meteo) are loaded from third-party services. These services may log your IP address as part of normal HTTP requests.

Advertising cookies are used only for the Mediavine ads described above. Choices to opt out of interest-based advertising are in the Privacy Policy, including the National Advertising Initiative, the Digital Advertising Alliance and the Network Advertising Initiative.

3. How to manage cookies

You can configure your browser to block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, or delete existing cookies. Instructions vary by browser:

Disabling strictly-necessary cookies may impair some site functionality but you will still be able to view all reservoir data and the RTI.
